GUANA]n. a major island of the southeastern Bahamas: 1523 Mayaguana (Turin map). 1627 Mariguani (map quoted by Durrell 1972:18). 1635 Maiaguana (Atlas Novus). 1804 Mayaguana . . as yet is uninhabited, and known only to mariners (McKinnen 143). 1816 Meriguani (Chart of the Bahamas). 1869 Mayaguana owes its name to the guana lizard, or the lizard gave its name to the island (Bacot 7).
